Colorado College Criterium 2008
Race Report By Mike (3/20/08)
On the 19th Dan Le and I took part in the Cat 4-5 Colorado College criterium downtown. It was a fast course and since they switched the direction from last year, much easier to navigate. The wind was pretty bad along the back stretch but not bad when there are a dozen or so Front Rangers that think they're invincible at the front. The race stayed together every lap even through the climb. Dan attacked at the bottom of the hill on the final lap and slowly faded but opened the door for me to short cut over the handicap ramp and sprint to victory (my first ever on the skinny tires of a road bike). Along the way I also took two of the prime laps. Dan fell back to 14th but gave me a great jump in the process.
As for the road race, there was no way I was doing that wind-whipped hell ride.
And then there was the precursor to the Chalk Creek Stampede. Keith and the RPM crew put together the Spring Series race this last weekend. The XC was the same course as we'll run this weekend. Nothing has changed except for the addition of some more sand. Hints: left line leading up to the climb and right line along the fence. The competition was pretty scarce out there, and I was the only one donning the colors of Procycling. I don't understand that, since the raffle is always awesome (I won a Yeti Arc frame last year). I ended up winning the whole of the Sport categories by 3 minutes +. I don't think that indicative of what next weekend will be like though.
See some of you on the team ride tomorrow and the rest of you in Nathrop on Saturday.
Dawn to Dusk Race 2008
Race Report by Larry (3/12-13/08)
Hi All, We had a great time in Gallup, NM at the Dawn til Dusk. ProCycling as well as Colorado Springs had a strong representation. My guess is the only city that had more riders there then CS was Albuquerque. Kara had an incredible race finishing second in the Women's Single Speed. Kara finished 8 laps in 11hrs 30 min Dan finished 3rd in the Men's Single Speed 0 - 39 Age group. Dan finished 8 laps in 11hrs 03 min I finished 5 in the Geared 45+ category with 8 laps in 10hrs 54 min. The course was awesome. 13 mile completely single track loop. Even after 6+ hours it was still fun. It did beat us up quite a bit though. It was a busy course in that you had to stay focused at all times. There was really no where to take a mental break like on a fire road or something. It was a great venue. Reminded me of Leadville's early days. The whole town is behind the race, with the mayor, former mayor, & city council members there at the award ceremony. I highly recommend it. Great race and congrats to Kara and Dan for making the podium at a really tough race! larry

| Tip of the Day | Run Stan's tubeless; it's worth it! I have also found, as a smaller rider, that it is important to play around with your tire pressure. I run 32 psi or lower. Riding is not just a physical sport; for me, 95% of it is mental. Don't just focus on the bad days. |

| First mtb | Mongoose Amplifier. This was my first "real" mtb, and it was a sweetheart ...visible flex in every direction, 1 inch of fork travel, regular catastrophic frame failures. It had it all. |
| 2008 Race Bike | Look 959 Carbon hardtail |
| Tip of the Day | Hydration...it's way overrated! Don't drink lots of useless fluids, then drag them around like some overloaded tanker. Save your hydration efforts for post ride beers! |
| Favorite ride | Palmer Park. I cut my mtb teeth there, and I still think it's the most fun, challenging, and convenient piece of real estate in the county. It's one of those gems we natives tend to take for granted. |
| Career highlights | 1993 Beginner world champ, Vail, CO world championships. Hey, it was the world championships! 1998 Colorado State Champion, Senior Expert Motocross. (The heading says "Career" highlights, not MTB career highlights). |
| 2007 highlights | Several top 3 finishes in the mountain states cup, 4th overall in 50+ expert class...shoulda been 2nd overall, but I was too damn lazy to go to one of the last short track races of the season, and my competition did. Serves me right. |
| 2008 goals | Race hard and have lots of fun at all the great Colorado venues we get to compete at this year. |

| Tip of the Day | High performance drink mixes are most efficient when mixed at the recommended concentrations. When you use a mixed bottle and a plain water bottle, you're just diluting the mixture, which makes it much less effective. |
| Favorite ride | Barr Trail |
| Career highlights | 36 career podiums between Junior Expert, Expert, and SemiPro, during my now 16-year mountain bike racing career. Have lined up with such legends as Ned Overend, Travis Brown, Tinker Juarez, and Thomas Frishknecht over the years (but it's not who you line up with, it's how you finish. ..) |
| 2007 highlights | 2nd place, Pro/SemiPro Hill climb, Telluride (winner, SemiPro); 2nd place Keystone Climax XC; 4th place Eldora Escape XC |
| 2008 goals | Focus on the Mountain States Cup, hope to have at least one SemiPro victory; at least 3 SemiPro podium appearances |
